The MML maintains a long standing tradition of supporting Michigan’s municipal attorneys. The League’s General Counsel, working with the Inquiry staff, regularly consult on a wide range of legal issues. While the MML attorneys may not, by state statute, render legal opinions, advice and counsel are available to augment the work of attorneys serving municipalities. Assistance is available on problems which may be unique to a municipality – or through development of coalitions of municipalities which all face the same challenge.
The extensive resources of the MML library, including the municipal charter database, municipal ordinance file, Municipal Reports publications, and One Pager Plus Fact Sheets are among the resources utilized by the MML attorney. Finally, the General Counsel, as the Administrator to the MML Legal Defense Fund, fields requests for, and seeks out cases where LDF assistance is warranted – those cases where the legal issues involved will have statewide impact.
