Congratulations on your new position and welcome to the Michigan Municipal League! For more than 100 years, the League has provided advocacy, education, and assistance to local officials to help them provide improved services and administration. Your municipality’s membership in the League provides you with access to these services, designed to help you understand your new responsibilities in local government.
As one of your first steps in public office, we encourage you to sign-up for one of our Newly Elected Officials training sessions. These sessions, held in a variety of locations around the state, help educate you on the primary functions you will need to know in your role as a public leader. Check our League Calendar for a session near you.

Elected Officials Academy
As a newly elected official, you automatically become a member of the Elected Officials Academy! All you have to do is activate your membership by clicking on the EOA link and signing up.
The EOA is a voluntary program designed to encourage elected officials to pursue education on topics critical to governing their city or village, and to participate in a variety of leadership roles. Officials are recognized as they complete each of three levels in the Academy. Participation in these core activities provides officials with the tools they need to make sound decisions affecting their community’s future.

As you continue expanding your understanding of local issues to best serve your community, the Elected Officials Academy is here to link you with exclusive educational opportunities – and recognize your efforts along the way.
2025 Training Dates
- February 21-22 – EOA Winter Summit, Virtual
- May 16-17 – EOA Spring Summit, Bay City
Core Summit
Offered twice a year (February and May), the Core Summit aims to equip elected municipal officials with a solid foundation of knowledge upon which to build their effectiveness as community leaders. The conveniently condensed weekend-length seminar allows participants to dive in on the fundamentals of leadership, financial management, and planning & zoning. Upon completion, attendees will be able to differentiate between the roles of the councilmember, the mayor/president, and the city manager; understand the Uniform Budgeting and Accounting Act; identify the sources of taxes and revenue sharing; use zoning checks and balances; and make effective zoning decisions. The Core Summit is required to complete Level One of the Academy.

Advanced Summit
Offered twice a year (February and May), Advanced Summit provide an opportunity for elected officials to deepen their knowledge of municipal issues after completing the Core Summit. Advanced Summits are presented on a rotating schedule of topics, so officials may attend multiple Advanced Summits for fresh content on a variety of subjects including leadership development and municipal finance & budgeting. Participating in Advanced Summits is a great way to earn the Elective credits required for Academy Levels Two and Three.
