Content
Articles should be:
- relevant to Michigan local governments and preferably feature a project or official in a member Michigan city, village, or urban township;
- written to our audience of newly elected officials.
Length
- Short articles should be one magazine page. (650 words)
- Feature articles should be one and a half to two magazine pages. (950 – 1,200 words)
Style
- Defined technical terms.
- Write out acronyms in full the first time they are used, followed by the acronym in parentheses, e.g., National League of Cities (NLC).
- Use subheadings to introduce new sections of text.
- Create a descriptive title for your articles.
Artwork/graphs/charts/photographs
You will be provided a link to upload:
- Graphs and charts
- Please submit as digital files in a PC platform (See guidelines).
- Include a caption that clarifies or adds to the information presented in the graph or chart.
- The League will format articles according to our brand and style guide (Chicago Manual of Style).
- Photos
- 300 dpi resolution or higher.
- They should add visual interest. Unposed photographs that show action are preferred.
- Please identify each photo with a caption that clarifies or adds to the information presented in the articles.
Author Recognition
- Author bylines include name and professional certification initials. (e.g., by Kathy Dornan, CMC)
- Articles are concluded with a brief biographical statement of the author’s professional credentials. (e.g.,: Patsy S. Clark is president of Patsy S. Clark and Associates. You may contact Patsy at (phone) or by email at (email address).
- Please include your title, organization/business, phone number, and email address.
- League Business Alliance Program (BAP) participants receive special recognition in their articles, which include a description of their services and a BAP logo.
