Build on Your Foundation at the Core Summit

Newly Elected Officials Training helps officials get grounded in the basics of serving in office. The Core Summit is a natural next step in that learning journey—giving you more time to dig into the core knowledge and responsibilities that support effective local leadership.

You do not need to complete Newly Elected Officials Training before attending the Core Summit. Whether you’re newly elected, have already completed NEO, or have been serving for a while, the Summit is designed to strengthen your understanding of the fundamentals of municipal government.

Offered twice each year, the Core Summit covers essential topics every elected official should understand, including:

  • Roles and responsibilities — the different roles of the council, mayor or president, and municipal administration
  • Municipal finance — budgeting, financial management, taxes, and revenue
  • Legal foundations — the legal framework that shapes municipal decision-making
  • Planning and zoning — how zoning decisions are made and the elected official’s role in the process

The Core Summit is worth 8 Core credits and is required to complete Level 1: Education Award.
