Ecorse Riverfront Access Initiative: Kayak & Boat Launch Project
Community: City of Ecorse
Population: Under 6,000
Project Description
The City of Ecorse’s John D. Dingell Kayak and Boat Launch Projects is a strategic waterfront access initiative designed to reconnect residents and attract visitors to the Detroit River while advancing recreation, economic development, and environmental stewardship.
Located along the city’s riverfront, the project provides safe, accessible entry points for both motorized and non-motorized watercraft, including kayaks and small boats. Public access has historically been limited—particularly for underserved residents—and this project directly addresses that gap by delivering an inclusive, community-centered recreational asset.
Ecorse boasts world-class walleye fishing, and the launch positions the city as a regional destination for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts, driving visitor activity and supporting local businesses. Designed with accessibility at its core, the project promotes equitable access, encourages healthy lifestyles, and serves as a catalyst for future waterfront investment and long-term economic growth.
Is your project easy to replicate in other communities (clear in its impact and execution for other communities)?
Yes. The City of Ecorse’s Kayak and Boat Launch Project is highly replicable and can be adapted by communities of varying sizes with access to waterways or underutilized waterfronts. The project utilizes scalable, cost-effective infrastructure such as modular kayak launches, accessible boat ramps, and supporting amenities that can be implemented in phases based on available funding.
Its impact is clear and measurable—expanding public access, promoting recreation and public health, and supporting local economic activity through increased visitation. The model is straightforward: identify a suitable waterfront location, engage community stakeholders, secure funding, and implement accessible design elements that prioritize inclusivity and usability.
Because the project focuses on maximizing existing natural assets while minimizing complexity, it provides a practical framework that other municipalities can replicate to activate their own waterfronts and deliver meaningful community benefits.
What is the Community Wealth Impact (based on one or more of the categories you selected) of your project?
The City of Ecorse’s Kayak and Boat Launch Project delivers meaningful community wealth impact by improving public health, strengthening infrastructure, and enhancing long-term sustainability. By expanding equitable access to the Detroit River, the project promotes active lifestyles, supports mental well-being, and creates inclusive recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities.
As a strategic investment in public infrastructure, the launch transforms an underutilized waterfront into a functional, community-serving asset that supports both residents and visitors. The project also contributes to local economic vitality by attracting anglers and outdoor enthusiasts drawn to Ecorse’s world-class walleye fishing, increasing visitation and supporting nearby businesses.
From a sustainability perspective, the project encourages responsible use and appreciation of natural resources while laying the groundwork for continued waterfront improvements. Collectively, these impacts strengthen quality of life, foster community pride, and position Ecorse for long-term growth and resilience.
Describe the creativity and originality of your project.
The creativity of the City of Ecorse’s Kayak and Boat Launch Project lies in how it reimagines a traditional infrastructure investment as a comprehensive, user-centered waterfront experience. Rather than developing a standard boat launch, the City intentionally designed a multi-use, inclusive access point that serves both motorized and non-motorized users.
A key innovative feature is the integration of a fully automated kayak rental station in partnership with Rent.Fun, allowing users to rent kayaks on-demand without on-site staff. This removes operational barriers while ensuring consistent, equitable access.
The project also includes a dedicated kayak launch, fish cleaning station, and an expanded, upgraded parking area designed to accommodate trucks and trailers—enhancing usability for anglers and boaters drawn to Ecorse’s world-class walleye fishing.
By combining accessibility, smart technology, and thoughtful infrastructure design, Ecorse has transformed its riverfront into a modern, inclusive, and highly functional community asset.
