16/50 Project

Why 16/50?

When the project launched in 2018, only 16 percent of Michigan’s local government managers were women, despite women making up more than 50 percent of the state’s population.

Local governments face increasing challenges and deserve the very best leaders to help them succeed. For that, they need a pool of highly qualified talent from which to draw. The 16/50 Project is committed to ensuring that women are fully represented in that pool.

The 16/50 Project launched in 2018, when League data showed that women made up just 16 percent of Michigan’s local government managers. That data signaled a clear gap in leadership and an untapped source of skilled leaders for Michigan communities.

Since then, the 16/50 Project has trained nearly 200 women and increased the number of women serving in local government management roles to nearly one in four. We’re taking meaningful steps forward—but we’re not done yet.

Through resources, outreach, and professional development, the 16/50 Project continues to build a pipeline for emerging women leaders, equipping them to strengthen their communities and shape a thriving future through public service.
