FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 25, 2023

The following statement about Governor Whitmer’s 2023 State of the State Address can be attributed to Michigan Municipal League Board President Barbara Ziarko, councilmember for the City of Sterling Heights.

“In tonight’s State of the State speech, Governor Whitmer discussed her Make it in Michigan initiative and in doing so highlighted the need for thriving communities as a driver of economic development and talent. The League believes when community leaders, partners, and residents collaborate to develop equitable, resilient places we can improve the quality-of-life experience for all. We agree with the Governor that now is the time to make investments that will grow, attract, and retain talent, make our communities better places to live, and help our state become a place where anyone can thrive.

We look forward to working with the Governor and legislative leaders on creating great places and focusing on issues vital to our communities, residents, and businesses. Enhancing local resources like revenue sharing, supporting public safety, investing in infrastructure, and increasing access to attainable housing options, are a few of the key areas in which we can partner to achieve our shared goals around thriving communities.”
