City of Royal Oak: Ruck 22 March Supporting Veteran Health & Wellness
Community: City of Royal Oak
Population: Over 12,001
Project Description
Since 2017, the City of Royal Oak Veterans Events Committee has hosted the annual Ruck 22 March. This event blends physical activity, community connection, and direct support for veterans. Participants walk while carrying weighted packs to raise awareness of veteran suicide and the physical and mental challenges many veterans face after service.
More than a symbolic gesture, the Ruck 22 has generated tangible impact. The event has raised thousands of dollars for the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center and filled nine trailers with food donations for Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154.
This initiative reflects Royal Oak’s commitment to supporting veterans beyond traditional ceremonies. While the city continues to honor those who served, it also actively supports veterans who are living and in need today. The Ruck 22 March strengthens community bonds, promotes public health through physical activity, and provides a replicable model for communities seeking meaningful ways to serve those who served us.
Is your project easy to replicate in other communities (clear in its impact and execution for other communities)?
The Ruck 22 March is easy to replicate because it is built on a simple, flexible model that requires minimal resources. Communities can host a similar event using existing public spaces such as parks, sidewalks, or trails, with no need for specialized infrastructure.
The core concept, which is a community walk with optional weighted backpacks, can be adapted to fit any size community, budget, or level of participation. Local governments or volunteer groups can partner with veteran organizations, health providers, or service groups to align the event with local needs and direct donations where they will have the greatest impact.
Because the event is volunteer-driven and low-cost, it can be sustained year after year. Its structure also allows communities to scale participation, add fundraising or donation components, and tailor messaging while maintaining the same powerful purpose.
What is the Community Wealth Impact (based on one or more of the categories you selected) of your project?
The Ruck 22 March generates meaningful community wealth by directing resources to veterans and local organizations that serve them. Since 2017, the event has raised thousands of dollars and collected enough food to fill nine trailers, directly supporting veterans facing food insecurity.
Beyond financial contributions, the event strengthens community networks by bringing together residents, volunteers, and veteran-focused organizations in a shared mission. This collaboration builds social capital, which is an essential component of long-term community resilience.
The Ruck 22 March also promotes public health through physical activity and awareness, helping reduce isolation and improve overall well-being. Its low-cost, volunteer-driven model ensures that resources are maximized for impact, making it a sustainable and scalable approach to building community wealth while supporting those who served.
Describe the creativity and originality of your project.
The Ruck 22 March reimagines a traditional walk into a powerful, purpose-driven experience. By incorporating weighted backpacks, the event creates a visible and physical symbol of the burdens many veterans carry. It turns awareness into something participants can feel, not just observe.
What makes the project especially creative is how it blends public health, service, and storytelling into one accessible event. Participants of all ages and abilities can take part, whether walking, volunteering, or donating, creating multiple entry points for engagement.
The event also expands beyond a single day by pairing the march with tangible outcomes, including fundraising for the VA hospital and large-scale food collection efforts. This layered approach transforms a simple concept into a meaningful, community-wide initiative that is both impactful and memorable.
