2009 Award Honors Holland Mayor

Mayor Albert “Al” McGeehan has been an active advocate for healthy communities—not only at home, but in Lansing and beyond. Al was first elected to city council in 1977 where he served four “four-year” terms as a councilman-at-large. He is now in his eighth term as mayor of the city of Holland. In addition to his long service to the city, he also has five decades of teaching experience, including serving as chair of the social studies department for the Holland Public Schools. Al has served on several League and National League of Cities committees. For three years he represented the League as the West Michigan Regional Coordinator. From 2006 to 2008, Al served consecutive terms as president of the Michigan Association of Mayors. He has been active in numerous efforts across Michigan’s west coast, including the United Way, the March of Dimes, and Leadership West Michigan.

Created in memory of Dearborn Mayor Michael A. Guido, the peer-nominated honor celebrates a chief elected official who personifies professionalism and leadership, is dedicated to the citizens in their community and advocates on their behalf in Lansing and Washington, D.C.
