Here’s an exciting opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise with local government decision-makers! MML is seeking proposals for seminars on topics related to local government.

The Michigan Municipal League has been providing education for city and village officials and employees for more than a century. In addition to the annual convention, legislative conference and regional meetings, MML provides approximately 50 training programs a year on topics such as the Michigan Open Meetings Act, Basic Accounting, Managing Negativity in the Workplace, Downtown Development, Police and Fire Liability, Excavation Safety, Customer Service and Supervisory Skills, to name just a few.

The Michigan Municipal League is scheduling seminars for 2011 and beyond. If you or someone in your firm is an expert on one or more of the topics listed, and is an engaging and effective presenter, I encourage you to submit a proposal.

Preferred speaker qualifications:

  • 5+ years public presentation experience
  • 2+ years experience presenting on the topic of your proposal
  • 5-10 years professional experience in the field of your proposal
  • 2+ presentations on this topic within the last two years

Suggested topics:

  • Finance – GASB 34; Basic Budgeting for Police; Governmental Accounting for the Non-Financial Manager; Financial Reporting for the Non-Financial Manager; Capital Assets; Basic Bookkeeping for Communities under 5,000 Population; Internal Controls; Governmental Accounting Principles; Fixed Assets
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Environment
  • Downtown/Economic Development
  • Planning and Zoning
  • Land Use
  • Legal
  • Cemeteries
  • Personnel Issues
  • Transportation & Traffic Planning
  • Confined Space & Excavation Safety
  • Michigan’s “Sunshine Laws” – Open Meetings Act; Freedom of Information Act; Bullard-Plawecki Right to Know Act
  • Public Meetings – Parliamentary Procedure; Council Rules of Procedure
  • Other – Your choice of topic specific to city and village government in Michigan

Seminar proposal should include, at a minimum:

  • 250-word narrative summary of the seminar
  • Bulleted sample agenda of the topics you will discuss
  • Sample handouts of the topics you will discuss
  • Length of seminar: full day (6 hours); ½ day (3 hours); or 1 ½ hours)
  • Your fees (if any)
  • Your resume
  • References – Contact information for at least two organizations you have presented to within the past two years.

You may submit proposals for as many seminars as you are qualified to present. Acceptance of your proposal is not a guarantee that you will be selected to speak at a Michigan Municipal League seminar or event. All materials are subject to review by the League staff.
