ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The Michigan Municipal League has been awarded a Top Workplaces 2023 honor by Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces. The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by employee engagement technology partner Energage LLC. The confidential survey uniquely measures 15 culture drivers that are critical to the success of any organization, including alignment, execution and connection, to name a few.

“On behalf of the League Board of Trustees, we are all extremely proud that the League has been recognized for this prestigious award for the second consecutive year,” said League Board President Robert E. Clark. “To once again be the recipient of the Top Workplace Award, as viewed by our employees, is a positive statement about career opportunities and the League’s engaging workplace environment. Knowing that our employees enjoy working as a team in support of our mission and members is paramount to the success of the organization.”

The survey’s questions were categorized into themes. The League’s top three performing themes from the survey included: engaged, closely aligned and respected and supported. The survey defined engaged as, “maximum discretionary effort, commitment, and advocacy.” It defined closely aligned as, “shared belief in the direction, values and meaning.” Respected and supported was defined as, “inclusion, support, openness and appreciation.”

This is the second consecutive year the League has been named a winner for Top Workplaces. The organization won the award for the first time in 2022.

“It is an honor to be named a winner of the Michigan Top Workplaces 2023 Award,” said Dan Gilmartin, CEO and Executive Director of the League. “This recognition comes from direct feedback from our team, which means a lot to us. Loving where you work is vital to our role in serving our members. Without our members, we wouldn’t exist, nor have the opportunity to create thriving communities where Michiganders can work, live and play.”

Two hundred and ninety-four workplaces throughout the state took the Energage survey in 2023, and 226 of those participants were named winners by the Detroit Free Press. In comparison, there were 200 workplaces winners recognized in 2022 and 175 in 2021.

Out of this year’s Michigan workplaces that took the survey, 151 were in the Small Business Group (employers with 50–149 employees), including the League. Out of this year’s 226 winners, 151 were from the Small Business Group.

“Earning a Top Workplaces Award is a badge of honor for companies, especially because it comes authentically from their employees,” said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. “That’s something to be proud of. In today’s market, leaders must ensure they’re allowing employees to have a voice and be heard. That’s paramount. Top Workplaces do this, and it pays dividends.”
