A Fair Shot at Home in Hastings

Hastings works for its sense of belonging. You can see it on Main Street, at our festivals, and in our neighborhoods where people still greet each other by name. But as housing costs rise and options narrow, families are finding that sense of belonging harder to secure. The MI Home Program is designed to fix that.

“The MI Home Program empowers municipalities to shape our own solutions.”

— David J. Tossava

With $160 million in annual support, the program helps communities like Hastings rehabilitate existing homes, encourage new attainable development, and modernize zoning to meet today’s needs. What sets it apart is its core principle of partnership over preemption. It makes sure Lansing isn’t dictating one-size-fits-all “fixes.” Instead, it empowers municipalities to shape their own solutions.

In Hastings, we know what works: measured growth, local input, and maintaining the character that drew people here in the first place. With MI Home’s support, we can repair our aging housing stock, encourage smaller-scale infill, and make it easier for first-time buyers to find a home here.

Local leadership should never be sidelined; it should be strengthened. The result? Stronger neighborhoods, a more stable workforce, and families who can build their futures—right here in Hastings.
