Greenville’s Path: Practical Housing, Local Leadership

We in Greenville have always been folks who roll up our sleeves. We fix what needs fixing. We find practical ways forward. Housing is no exception. Our employers tell us they need homes for their workforce. The MI Home Program gives us the leverage to meet that demand without losing local control.
Well-intended state or federal efforts often forget that zoning, permitting, and neighborhood planning are local matters. With its motto of “partnership over preemption,” the MI Home Program doesn’t forget that. It recognizes that municipalities are closest to their own challenges and should lead their own solutions.

This isn’t some abstract theory. Small developers are ready to step up if financing gaps can be bridged. The MI Home Program does exactly that, providing the capital we need to make good projects work. Here in Greenville, we’re poised to add a substantial number of missing-middle housing units. The utilization of the MI Home Program couldn’t come at a more opportune time for us.
We need support. We don’t need orders. Housing development works best when communities have a voice. By respecting that principle, Lansing can help rather than hinder.
