Attorney Clyde Robinson Receives Outstanding Service Award
Michigan Municipal League Honors Kalamazoo City Attorney
LANSING, Michigan – Kalamazoo City Attorney Clyde Robinson has been honored with the Outstanding Service Award by the Michigan Municipal League. He received the award during the Michigan Municipal League’s annual Capital Conference Awards Gala March 19 in Lansing.
Robinson was recognized for his long-time assistance with the League, including most recently in the League’s effort to understand and provide information around the complicated issue of medical and recreational marijuana. The award was given to Robinson by the League’s General Counsel Chris Johnson, and Legislative Associate Jennifer Rigterink.
“This isn’t an award the League gives out every year,” Johnson said. “But Clyde’s work on this complex topic has truly been outstanding. The Michigan Municipal League now uses the white paper he wrote and presentations he’s done on the marijuana-related laws as go-to resources for our members. His work helps guide our communities in how they approach this issue.”
Robinson has spent his entire legal career practicing municipal law. He worked for the city of Battle Creek from 1980 to 2008, becoming city attorney in 1999. In 2008, he was named Kalamazoo City Attorney. He has served on the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys Board of Directors since 2002 and as its President from 2015 to 17.
Over the years, Robinson provided guidenance to the League on many issues, including the challenges surrounding the state’s new medical and recreational marijuana laws. Robinson has attended meetings, informational workshops, and conferences around the state with League staff on this issue. He has participated in conference calls, reviewed legislation, suggested alternative language, drafted educational resources, and has been available to answer questions, offer insight, and provide feedback whenever needed. The League’s efforts to be at the forefront of providing information to our members about the complex marijuana laws and regulations has been greatly enhanced by Robinson’s efforts.
Robinson said he was honored by the award and gave special appreciation to the Kalamazoo city leaders.
“I really want to thank the people of Kalamazoo, in particular the city commission, because without their support and willingness to permit me to work on these things on behalf of the League I wouldn’t be able to do this work,” Robinson said. “Thank you very much.”
About the award: The Outstanding Service Award is granted to individuals or communities who have gone above and beyond in helping League staff advocate on behalf of all local communities at the state and/or federal level. From being involved in the League’s internal committee process, to testifying in front of legislative committees, to being involved on League or legislative workgroups, their feedback and time commitment has been crucial to League efforts.
