FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 9, 2025

This statement is issued on behalf of the Michigan Municipal League.

At a recent planning commission meeting in a western Michigan township, inflammatory rhetoric was used to villainize certain types of housing development and developers. We believe this is inappropriate and counterproductive.

Michigan’s housing needs will not be addressed through exclusionary practices. It is critical for our communities to plan for an array of housing options, ones that meet the needs of residents and property owners while also resonating with developers. It is possible to offer a range of housing types while also respecting a neighborhood’s character and values.

Local input is a crucial factor in crafting effective solutions. The League’s proposed MI Home Program supports this goal by emphasizing collaboration. It positions state and local government as partners in meeting the evolving needs of Michigan residents, expanding economic opportunity, and making it attainable to live in the communities we hold so dear.

Michigan Municipal League is dedicated to making Michigan’s communities better by thoughtfully innovating programs, energetically connecting ideas and people, actively serving members with resources and services, and passionately inspiring positive change for Michigan’s greatest centers of potential: its communities. The League advocates on behalf of its member communities in Lansing, Washington, D.C., and the courts; provides educational opportunities for elected and appointed municipal officials; and assists municipal leaders in administering services to their communities through League programs and services.
