LANSING, Michigan – The Michigan Municipal League has honored Ludington Councilor Kathy Winczewski with the League’s Elected Officials Academy (EOA) Level Four Ambassador Award. Winczewski received the award on March 13, at the League’s Capital Conference in Lansing.
The EOA is an ongoing four-level program that educates and recognizes elected officials across the state for their dedication to becoming as professional and knowledgeable as possible in the role of public servant. The program was created in 1997 by a board of elected officials working with League staff.
The Ambassador Award is presented each year to participants of the EOA who have completed the fourth and final level of the program. Winczewski joins a small number of elected officials who have attained this achievement. Winczewski was honored alongside the two other level four graduates from this year, Berkley Councilmember Dennis Hennen and Montrose Mayor Colleen Brown, making sixteen total recipients since the program’s inception.
“Congratulations to Kathy Winczewski on this great achievement,” said League Board President Robert E. Clark, Mayor of Monroe. “Her dedication to public service is especially evident through her environmental work. She is committed to protecting our natural resources, especially our water and parks and recreation. This award is another example of her commitment to bettering our communities.”
Kathy Winczewski is the city councilor for the 2nd Ward, which she has served for the past 10 years. She serves as the chair of the Finance and Personnel Committee and sits on the Parks and Recreation Committee. She is also a member of several other local community boards and organizations, including the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission, Friends of Ludington State Park, The Emergency Management Team and A Few Friends for the Environment of the World. She is a mom to three sons and previously was a chemistry teacher at her local high school.
“The Elected Officials Academy has played an integral part in my growth as a city councilor,” said Winczewski. “Going through levels one through three, I’ve participated in a variety of educational opportunities and built leadership skills that I have brought to my community, our state, and the League. This program has helped me to become the experienced city councilor that I am today.”
