FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 14, 2020

Michigan local government leaders to discuss support for U.S. House aid package

Proposed HEROES Act to Provide Much-Needed Support to Michigan Communities in Battle Against Coronavirus

What: Leaders of the Michigan Municipal League will outline the financial difficulties communities are facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic and their support for the Heroes Act package that would provide additional resources to help communities of all sizes around Michigan.

When: Thursday, May 14, 2 p.m.

Where: Zoom call: Members of the media can register in advance for the Zoom call here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_idap3AcTRZutaumlhnGOfQ. If you have difficulty registering contact Matt Bach (810-874-1073) or David Waymire (517-290-3610)

Who:     Mayor Pro Tem Brenda F. Moore, City of Saginaw, and League Board President
Mayor William R. Wild, City of Westland, and League Vice President
Mayor Stephen Gawron, City of Muskegon, and League board member
Jim Ritsema, City Manager, City of Kalamazoo
Mayor Maureen Donker, City of Midland
Dan Gilmartin, CEO & Executive Director, Michigan Municipal League

Why: Michigan cities are providing front line services such as ambulance, fire and police protection during the COVID-19 pandemic, but revenues are dropping off from a variety of sources: Income and sales taxes (which make up revenue sharing), parking revenue (even as bond payments for ramps are due); concerns about commercial real estate assessments and more. The HEROES Act pending in Washington would assist cities and villages, just as the federal government has helped out corporations, airlines, small businesses and citizens, and the Michigan Municipal League is encouraging Michigan’s members of Congress to back the proposal.

For additional information contact the League’s Matt Bach, director of communications, at (810) 874-1073 (cell) and [email protected].
