On Tuesday, Governor Whitmer signed legislation that would extend the sunset for the current funding system for Michigan trial courts. HB 5392 from Rep. Lightner, now PA 38 of 2024 extends the sunset until December 31, 2026.

Legislative action on HB 5392 and 5534 from Rep. Breen came to a head last week when both chambers engaged in same day action, initiated by the Michigan Senate breaking the original tie bar that anchored the two bills together. Once the tie bar was broken, HB 5392 passed both chambers with overwhelming support. HB 5534 advanced from the Senate along party lines, but failed to pass the House. At a later date, the House with two new members seated in the majority, will reconsider HB 5534.
