House Committee considers limitations on law enforcement drones

Posted on April 17, 2013 by Dene Westbrook

This morning the House Criminal Justice Committee considered House Bills 4455 and 4456, bills that create limitations and reporting requirements for the use of unmanned drones by law enforcement agencies.

Drones have become an innovative option for law enforcement as communities look to cut costs. The League opposed the legislation along as did the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and the Sheriffs Association.

We recognize the privacy concerns but need to balance that with this effective law enforcement tool. The committee discussed putting together a workgroup to further consider this legislation.
