Senate considers preemption on leave time for local employers

Posted on March 20, 2013 by Dene Westbrook

This morning the Senate Reforms, Restructuring and Reinventing Committee considered SB 173, a bill that would prohibit local units of government from passing an ordinance or policy requiring private employers to mandate either paid or unpaid leave time for its employees.

The committee heard additional testimony and received a number of amendments from the Democratic members of the Senate. The committee recessed without voting but may reconvene later today.

While we do not know of any communities who have such policies or are interested in passing such policies, the legislation violates local control, and the League opposed the legislation.
