House committee considers police and fire special assessment legislation

Posted on March 7, 2013 by Dene Westbrook

Yesterday the House Tax Policy took testimony on House Bill 4147, a bill that would allow a village, township or qualified city to levy police and fire special assessments other than on an ad valorem basis.

Last session the League took no position on this legislation and continues to take no position this session.  Some members have expressed interest in this type of policy and indicate that it could perhaps incent cooperation and consolidation efforts.

The committee is expected to vote on the legislation next week.

Samantha Harkins is the Director of State Affairs for the League. She can be reached at 517-908-0306 and sharkins at mml.org.
