Project Description

The relocation of the Holly Union Depot stands as one of the most significant preservation efforts in the history of the Village of Holly, Michigan. Built in 1886, the depot once served as a bustling hub for rail travel and commerce, reflecting Holly’s important role in Michigan’s railroad network. By the late twentieth century, however, the structure faced deterioration and the threat of loss due to projected expansion by the Railroad. Recognizing its historical and cultural value, the Village undertook an ambitious project to move the entire building to a safer location near its current site.

The relocation required careful engineering and strong community support, as the historic brick structure was lifted and transported to preserve it for future generations. The depot will remain a centerpiece of Holly’s historic district and a symbol of the community’s commitment to honoring its railroad heritage while adapting to modern needs.

Not specifically. However, it is an important lesson in preserving important parts of our history, while also looking forward to the future.

What is the Community Wealth Impact (based on one or more of the categories you selected) of your project?

By saving and repositioning the historic depot, the Village preserved an important cultural asset that continues to generate economic and social value. Historic landmarks like the depot help strengthen local identity, attract tourism, and support small businesses in the surrounding downtown area. Visitors drawn to Holly’s railroad heritage contribute to restaurants, shops, and events, helping circulate dollars within the local economy.

Describe the creativity and originality of your project.

Rather than allowing the historic depot to deteriorate or be demolished, the Village of Holly pursued the innovative solution of physically moving the structure to a location where it could be preserved and integrated into the community’s future development.

Relocating a historic structure of this size required creative problem-solving, careful engineering, and strong collaboration between local leaders, preservationists, and residents. This project balances historical preservation with modern community needs, ensuring the building will remain functional while maintaining its architectural character.

The originality of the project lies in how Holly will turn a vulnerable historic structure into a centerpiece for heritage tourism and community identity. By reimagining the depot as a preserved landmark and gathering space, the Village demonstrated how creative preservation strategies can support both cultural heritage and long-term community development.
