Act Now! Tell Your Legislators to Support Communities This Lame Duck Session

Posted on November 19, 2020 by Dene Westbrook

UPDATE: Attend our news conference on this Community Stabilization Plan 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, by registering here (it’s free). Get more details about the event here.

Leading up to the Lame Duck legislative period that starts in early December, we will be aggressively rolling out what we are calling our Community Stabilization Plan.

We need your help to make this effort a success!

This three-part plan explains the financial crisis our communities are facing due to COVID-19 exacerbated by the state’s broken municipal finance system. Unless the Michigan Legislature acts quickly to pass what we’re calling for in this plan, local government bodies will be unable to safely conduct business, and revenue losses will result in drastic cuts to public safety, infrastructure, parks, and other vital services essential to their quality of life.

This effort starts with you and a letter we are hoping you can send to your legislators.

We’ve made this ask easy for you. You can use this special email tool here in our action center to personally send your letter to your state lawmakers. You can edit this sample letter and put it in your own words as well. In addition, here is a link to the letter and a here is a link to a fact sheet explaining the Community Stabilization Plan and providing you talking points.

Please note that in sending this letter to your legislators, we will use your support as part of our advocacy efforts.

It is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic will greatly impact local governments financially. In addition, the impact from the accompanying economic hit will drag on for local governments potentially for years as we saw happen in the Great Recession. We need to act now to protect our local governments, communities, and businesses.

We are also planning a news conference 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30 to inform the media and public about our Community Stabilization Plan. League members and supporters are welcome to watch the press conference on our Facebook page or by registering for the free event here.

Send your letters now by clicking here to get started. Thank you!
