Department of Justice Web Accessibility Rule Deadline Extended

April 24, 2026
There was good news from Washington this week! In response to advocacy from NLC, MML, and other local allies, an interim final rule was released from the Department of Justice, extending the effective date for compliance with its new website accessibility rules by one year. The new deadlines are now April 26, 2027 for government entities with populations of 50,000 and above, and April 26, 2028 for government entities with populations below 50,000 and special districts.
The interim rule was published by the Federal Register on Monday, April 20.
As this issue continues to develop, we will provide additional information and guidance. In the meantime, this extension provides communities with meaningful relief and time to ensure compliance with these new requirements.
