US Senate Will Vote on Marketplace Fairness Act May 6th

Posted on April 29, 2013 by Dene Westbrook

Last week another victory occured in the effort to bring equity to online sales tax collections. The Senate voted 63-30 to invoke cloture on the legislation known as the Marketplace Fairness Act, which would allow states to collect sales taxes on online purchases. This sets it up for final passage on May 6th, when Congress returns from its one week break. Both Senators Stabenow and Levin supported the measure. The League has been very supportive of this effort and has been in communication with both Michigan Senate offices regarding the issue. We are thankful for their support on this issue as it is n important step in assisting local retailers. And, some estimates conclude Michigan may get up to an additional $140 million annually if the bill becomes law.
