House Committee Takes Testimony on Tax Exemption BIll for Veterans’ Organizations

Posted on April 26, 2012 by Dene Westbrook

Yesterday, the House Tax Policy Committee took testimony on a bill that would exempt all property (real and personal) owned by any veteran’s service organization. The bill, HB 5457 is sponsored by Rep. Heise (R-Plymouth). The League testified in opposition to the bill as an additional cut to local revenues. While this individual exemption may not be worth a significant amount of taxable value alone, coupled with many of the other tax exemption bills the committee has taken testimony on recently, in totality – the impact could be large. In addition, opening up exemptions to non-profits outside of charitable or governmental opens the door to many other organizations who could easy then ask to be included in exemptions. The committee took testimony only on the bill.

Summer Minnick is the Director of State Affairs for the League. She can be reached at (517)908-0301 or [email protected].
