Unveiling Set for Plans to Revitalize Historic Hamtramck Stadiums

Officials to Release Study This Week at Veterans Memorial Park

What: A community appreciation dinner and unveiling of a long-term plan to rejuvenate the Veterans Memorial Park area, that includes Keyworth Stadium, where the Detroit City FC now plays, and the Historic Hamtramck Stadium, which was once home to the Negro National League Detroit Stars. This Hamtramck Recreation District planning effort has been supported by a major grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation. Also related to this effort, was a 2019 Public Spaces Community Places crowdfunding campaign that received significant donations from Detroit rock star Jack White of the legendary Detroit garage-rock band the White Stripes, and others.

When: 6-8 p.m. Friday, January 31.

Where: People’s Community Services, 8633 Joseph Campau Ave., Hamtramck, MI 48212

Who: The City of Hamtramck and Hamtramck Public Schools have partnered to develop a plan for the revitalization of the Veteran’s park area. The presentation of the plan will be given by Ten x Ten consulting and Global Detroit, the team which led the design and community engagement effort for park plan. The Michigan Municipal League Foundation has served as the fiduciary of the park area project.

Why: Many months and years in the making, this plan represents a significant opportunity to assist in the transformation of Hamtramck and the Detroit metro area for the future. Specifically, for the last year community members, business owners and nonprofit leaders have been sharing their ideas for the future use and improvements of the Hamtramck Recreation District area. This event is to thank the community for their work and to unveil the plan.
