Port Huron Mayor Pauline Repp Retained as President of Michigan Association of Mayors

Ferrysburg Mayor Rebecca Hopp Continues as Vice President

ANN ARBOR, Michigan — Port Huron Mayor Pauline Repp recently started a second one-year term as president of the Michigan Association of Mayors (MAM). Repp continued in her role as president Friday, Oct. 2, at the organization’s annual board meeting, which took place during the Michigan Municipal League 2020 virtual Convention.

In addition, Ferrysburg Mayor Rebecca Hopp will remain as vice president of the association. Both received one-year terms in October of 2019, and the group opted to have them continue serving in these roles because they weren’t able to fully implement their duties as officers in 2020 due to the COVD-19 pandemic.

The Michigan Association of Mayors (MAM) is the official nonpartisan organization of Michigan’s chief elected officials. Representing 139 Michigan communities, MAM works to assist the chief elected officials of cities, townships and villages; advance the various interests and operations of communities represented by its members and all Michigan communities; promote cooperation among communities statewide; and advocate local interests at the state and federal level.

Repp was born in Kent County, England and grew up in both Canada and the United States, obtaining her U.S. citizenship in 1988. In 1983, she began work at the City of Port Huron as executive secretary to City Manager Gerry Bouchard. Repp was promoted to the position of city clerk in 1989 and served in that capacity for nearly 20 years, retiring with the designation of Master Municipal Clerk. In 2009, she ran for a position on City Council. As the top vote-getter, she was appointed mayor. Subsequently, the position of mayor became an elected position, and she has since been elected four times. Repp completed Level 1 of the Elected Officials Academy (EOA), has served on the League Board of Trustees (BOT), and was a member of the BOT Convention Ad-Hoc Committee.

“It’s a very challenging time right now for the leaders of our communities and I am honored that my peers have asked me to continue as president of MAM for the next year,” said Repp. “Together, we will work to get our communities up and running again while also addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion issues that have been brought to the national spotlight in recent months.”

Hopp is serving her second term as mayor for the City of Ferrysburg. As mayor, she continues to be actively involved with several local, regional and state boards, demonstrating her comprehensive knowledge and leadership skills in numerous capacities. Hopp is an EOA Level 4 graduate, EOA past president, former member of the League Board of Trustees, and past president of Michigan Women in Municipal Government.

Hopp’s dedication to her community includes creator/co-chairperson of the Smith’s Bayou Chili Cook-off, which has raised significate funding for multiple West Michigan nonprofit agencies. Hopp is dedicated to the City of Ferrysburg and continues creating new initiatives and opportunities for residents, visitors, and business owners.
“I am honored to continue to serve as vice president of this great organization,” said Hopp. “I look forward to working with MAM President Repp to help lead our fellow mayors and village presidents through the next year.”

In addition to Repp, Hopp, and Hastings Mayor Dave Tossava serving additional 3-year terms, the board is comprised of Auburn Mayor Lee Kilbourn, Baraga Village President Wendell Dompier, Fremont Mayor Jim Rynberg, Zeeland Mayor Kevin Klynstra and Monroe Mayor Robert Clark. The board is expected to appoint Bad Axe Mayor Kathleen Particka to fill a vacancy at its October 2020 meeting.
