Grand Traverse Greenway
The Grand Traverse Greenway is a 3-mile-long former CSX railroad line that the City of Flint has been working to acquire and convert to a bike/walk trail with support from MDNR and MDOT. The PlacePlan process used input from residents and businesses at multiple community meetings to create a design concept that would provide a sense of connection between places along the trail, as well as support both recreational needs and safety interests.
Key Recommendations
The trail plan provides concepts for the trail’s intersections with major streets, serving as both “trailheads” to provide access as well as making pedestrians and cyclists visible to drivers, improving safety. The concept also includes guidelines for planting and landscape elements that link the trail to natural spaces, such as the Spring Grove wetland and Thread Creek, while providing maintaining an open and high-visibility environment, and for signs, lighting, and other features along the trail. Additionally, the plan includes recommendations for building off of the existing cultural, education, and entrepreneurial assets in the area to support use of the trail, implementation of the new Master Plan, and the health of the surrounding neighborhoods as a whole.
