President Signs American Rescue Plan; ‘Historic Moment’ for Local Governments.
League Statement on Signature of COVID-19 Stimulus Package
ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The following statement from the Michigan Municipal League is issued in reaction to President Biden’s signature of the American Rescue Plan, which will provide direct aid to local governments whose budgets have been decimated by COVID-19. The statement is attributable to League Board President Bill Wild, Mayor of Westland.
“The passage of the American Rescue Plan will bring desperately-needed relief to municipal governments large and small across the state of Michigan. This is a historic moment for Michigan local governments and communities across the nation.
“Local communities have been on the front lines of response to COVID-19, while at the same time their budgets have been stretched to the breaking point. The $65 billion in direct aid to local governments will ensure our communities can recover and rebuild from the financial devastation caused by COVID-19, while continuing to provide public safety, infrastructure maintenance and other vital services residents and businesses rely on every day,” Mayor Wild said.
“We would especially like to thank Michigan U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters as well as every member of Michigan’s congressional who supported the approval of this relief package. There remains much to be done as we work to recover and rebuild from the devastation of this virus, but we are confident The American Rescue Plan will put Michigan on the path toward success as we work together to emerge stronger than ever in the face of this unprecedented challenge.”
