{"id":9487,"date":"2014-01-16T08:48:32","date_gmt":"2014-01-16T12:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.mml.org\/wp\/inside208\/?p=2744"},"modified":"2014-01-16T08:48:32","modified_gmt":"2014-01-16T12:48:32","slug":"house-considers-changes-to-open-meetings-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mml.org\/inside208\/2014\/01\/16\/house-considers-changes-to-open-meetings-act\/","title":{"rendered":"House Considers Changes to Open Meetings Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week the House Oversight Committee heard testimony on House Bills 5193 and 5194, bills that amend the Open Meetings Act.<\/p>\n<p>House Bill <a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2013-2014\/billintroduced\/House\/pdf\/2013-HIB-5193.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5193<\/a> prohibits a local unit from going into closed session in connection with anticipated litigation. House Bill <a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2013-2014\/billintroduced\/House\/pdf\/2013-HIB-5194.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5194<\/a> indicates that if a public body reenacts a disputed decision in cases where an action has been initiated to invalidate a decision of a public body then that reenactment is not a defense to a criminal action.<\/p>\n<p>The League testified in opposition to this legislation. In particular the changes to HB 5193 are confusing and unnecessary.
