{"id":9450,"date":"2013-12-11T14:35:12","date_gmt":"2013-12-11T18:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.mml.org\/wp\/inside208\/?p=2661"},"modified":"2013-12-11T14:35:12","modified_gmt":"2013-12-11T18:35:12","slug":"house-committee-passes-bill-to-allow-for-transition-from-land-lines-to-internet-based-telephone-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mml.org\/inside208\/2013\/12\/11\/house-committee-passes-bill-to-allow-for-transition-from-land-lines-to-internet-based-telephone-service\/","title":{"rendered":"House Committee Passes Bill to Allow for Transition from Land Lines to Internet-Based Telephone Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This afternoon the House Energy &amp; Technology Committee reported <a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2013-2014\/billintroduced\/Senate\/pdf\/2013-SIB-0636.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 636<\/a>, a bill that would give phone companies the ability to transition from traditional land lines to internet-based service beginning January 1, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would amend the Michigan Telecommunications Act to do make a number of changes including eliminating a requirement for a Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) proceeding for a telecommunication provider to discontinue basic local exchange or toll service to an exchange, beginning January 1, 2017. It would also require a provider wishing to discontinue service to notify the MPSC, the provider\u2019s customers, any interconnecting providers, and the public at the same time as filing a petition for discontinuance with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).<\/p>\n<p>The bill would further require a provider to notify the same parties again upon the FCC\u2019s approval, at least 90 days before discontinuing service.
