{"id":8958,"date":"2012-06-04T10:09:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-04T15:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"\/advocacy\/inside208\/post\/Transportation-negotiations-enter-critical-phase.aspx"},"modified":"2012-06-04T10:09:00","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T15:09:00","slug":"transportation-negotiations-begin-to-sour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mml.org\/inside208\/2012\/06\/04\/transportation-negotiations-begin-to-sour\/","title":{"rendered":"Transportation negotiations begin to sour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recent reports from the conference committee tackling a new transportation authorization is that negotiations my have hit a stand still.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not only does the&nbsp;House Republican legislative agenda for the remainder of spring and summer not even mention transportation, but&nbsp;several House Republicans are now demanding a floor vote instrictuing House conferees to limit transportation spending to the funding available in the Highway Trust Fund. This would reduce&nbsp;transportation funding by&nbsp;at least 34% and conflict with the Senate passed bill pssed last month.<\/p>\n<p>Unless negotiators can come to agreement soon, it&nbsp;looks like another extension is on the way. With that in mind, the League has written a letter to Congressmen Camp and Upton (members of the conference committee) as well as the entire Michigan delegation detailing the need for some certainty by enacting a longer term transportation funding bill that provides adequate funding, and programs that will give locals the ability to create vibrant places for economic growth.&nbsp; <a href=\"\/advocacy\/inside208\/file.axd?file=2012%2f6%2fconference+committee+letter_may2012.pdf\">conference committee letter_may2012.pdf (576.62 kb)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Members are&nbsp;strongly&nbsp;encouraged to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mml.org\/advocacy\/federal\/federal-midelegation.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speak with their congressional representatives.<\/a> They need to hear from you about the importance of&nbsp;transportation infrastructure and&nbsp;the positive impact it can have on&nbsp;the economy of both urban and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mml.org\/resources\/21c3\/post\/2012\/05\/27\/Rural-areas-need-good-transit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rural areas <\/a>of our state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Arnold Weinfeld is Director of Strategic Initiatives and Federal Affairs for the Michigan Municipal League.
