Discussions will be happening <strong>TODAY<\/strong>. Contact your Representative to oppose HB 4722!<\/p>\n<p>The legislation seeks to eliminate a municipality\u2019s ability to regulate short-term vacation rentals. It does not include any <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.mml.org\/wp\/inside208\/2021\/10\/21\/short-term-rental-bills-introduced-good-neighbor-legislation-is-good-sense-compromise\/\">compromises<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300\"> local government groups have put forth seeking a middle ground. As<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300\">\u00a0the market proliferation of short-term rentals continues unabated, it is clear Michigan needs a balanced compromise. House Bill 4722 is not it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrla.org\/6-29-2021-mrla-releases-survey-data-indicating-michigan-voters-overwhelmingly-oppose-taking-away-local-control-of-short-term-rentals.html\">recent survey<\/a>, the vast majority of Michigan residents\u201489%\u2014are concerned about the effects short-term rentals will have on the prices and availability of housing, and nearly 80% believe that their local municipality should have a say over rules and regulations for short-term rentals. The survey provides compelling data that House Bill 4722 is missing the mark and not in tune with what Michigan residents want.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8372\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/inside208\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/10\/STR-fact-sheet-new-page-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8372\" class=\"lazyload size-medium wp-image-8372\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27232%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20232%20300%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27232%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"\/inside208\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/10\/STR-fact-sheet-new-page-2-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Page two of the new Short-Term Rental fact sheet.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The League will continue to adamantly oppose this zoning preemption legislation that destroys the integrity of neighborhoods, but we remain ready to work with all interested parties on a solution that provides a sensible compromise for Michigan communities, the economy and tourism industry while safeguarding property rights and the quality of life for residents.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this willingness to compromise, the League and several other groups and organizations put forth new bills that balance the necessity for communities to provide proper regulation and oversight over commercial enterprises in their neighborhoods while continuing to allow short-term rental properties in all communities.<\/p>\n<p>The new bills &#8211; House Bills\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(5qnm5kzugcbq3dkc0uqporwt))\/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&amp;objectName=2021-HB-5465\">5465<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(5qnm5kzugcbq3dkc0uqporwt))\/mileg.aspx?page=getobject&amp;objectname=2021-HB-5466\">5466<\/a> &#8211; are supported by a coalition of organizations representing local government, public safety, the restaurant and lodging industry, economic development and more. The compromise legislation was initiated as an alternative to the harmful HB 4722, currently on the House floor, which eliminates all authority for municipalities to zone for short-term rentals and creates a top-down, one-size-fits-all approach for every community in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The new bills balance the needs of both sides, allowing community oversight while ensuring property owner\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents turn to their locally elected officials when an issue arises, so these bills are a needed compromise to allow for municipalities to have reasonable oversight over short-term vacation rentals,\u201d stated the League&#8217;s Jennifer Rigterink, in a joint press release sent to the media last week. \u201cThe existing legislation ties local officials\u2019 hands, rendering them virtually powerless.
