NLC President Mark Stodola, mayor, Little Rock, Arkansas, and NLC CEO and Executive Director Clarence E. Anthony recently sent an open letter to city leaders on the state of America’s infrastructure. That letter is reproduced here:<\/em><\/p>\n

Dear City Leaders,<\/p>\n

Happy New Year! At the National League of Cities, every new year offers new opportunities to work with our federal partners on the most pressing issues facing cities and towns. For nearly every community in the country, closing America\u2019s $2 trillion infrastructure gap is at the top of that list.<\/p>\n

Cities and towns across the country are repaving roads, upgrading water treatment systems, and addressing the critical infrastructure needs of the future. But because we\u2019re restricted in how we fund these projects<\/u><\/a>, there are limits to what we can accomplish alone. We need a strong partner in the federal government.<\/p>\n

That’s why this year, the National League of Cities is launching a new advocacy initiative focused on fixing America\u2019s broken infrastructure.<\/strong> We’re calling on Congress to address critical improvements to our transportation systems, water infrastructure and broadband networks. Direct funding to cities is crucial, but we also need new ways for cities to fund such projects themselves.<\/p>\n

We are encouraged by statements from Congress and the White House that indicate infrastructure will be a federal priority in the year ahead, and look forward to working together on solutions.<\/p>\n
