{"id":2746,"date":"2014-01-16T12:30:09","date_gmt":"2014-01-16T16:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.mml.org\/wp\/inside208\/?p=2746"},"modified":"2014-01-16T12:30:09","modified_gmt":"2014-01-16T16:30:09","slug":"house-tax-policy-considers-bills-requiring-assessors-to-receive-written-consent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mml.org\/inside208\/2014\/01\/16\/house-tax-policy-considers-bills-requiring-assessors-to-receive-written-consent\/","title":{"rendered":"House Tax Policy to Consider Bills Requiring Assessors to Receive Written Consent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Next Wednesday the House Tax Policy Committee is considering two pieces of legislation that would require assessors to get written permission to enter structures in order to assess them.<\/p>\n<p>House Bill <a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2013-2014\/billintroduced\/House\/pdf\/2013-HIB-5172.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5172<\/a> requires written consent for an assessor to enter a structure, and if that consent is denied the assessor cannot increase the value of the property based on any assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>House Bill <a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2013-2014\/billintroduced\/House\/pdf\/2013-HIB-5173.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5173<\/a> states that the assessor&#8217;s procedural manual may not require a homeowner to grant an assessor access to a property nor may an assessor access a property without written permission.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously this legislation would significantly hamstring the ability of our assessors to do their jobs.
