{"id":1916,"date":"2013-05-16T14:18:05","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T19:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.mml.org\/wp\/inside208\/?p=1916"},"modified":"2013-05-16T14:18:05","modified_gmt":"2013-05-16T19:18:05","slug":"senate-considers-tax-exemptions-for-disabled-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mml.org\/inside208\/2013\/05\/16\/senate-considers-tax-exemptions-for-disabled-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate Considers Tax Exemptions for Disabled Veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the Senate Finance Committee considered two bills that would create tax exemptions for disabled veterans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2013-2014\/billintroduced\/Senate\/pdf\/2013-SIB-0104.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 104<\/a> would allow a community to give a tax exemption to a qualified disabled veteran. This is an option for a community and not a mandate.<\/p>\n<p>The committee also considered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2013-2014\/billintroduced\/Senate\/pdf\/2013-SIB-0352.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 352<\/a>, which would specifically exempt from property taxes real property used and owned as a homestead by a disabled veteran who was discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States under honorable conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The League continues to be opposed to mandatory property tax exemptions. In 2011 the legislature and administration eliminated state tax exemptions so as to not &#8220;pick winners and losers&#8221; and balance the state budget. Yet we continue to combat legislation that mandates our members give property tax exemptions for various individuals.
