To boost grant access for those in greatest need, the DNR also announced a partnership that will connect identified \u201copportunity communities\u201d with funding and the support of Michigan\u2019s philanthropic network.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fdnr%2Fabout%2Fnewsroom%2Freleases%2F2023%2F02%2F09%2Fmichigan-spark-grants-2023%3Futm_campaign%3Dspark%2Bgrants%2Bopen%2Bapps%2Bcmf%26utm_medium%3Dpr%26utm_source%3Dgovdelivery&amp;data=05%7C01%7CLapshans%40michigan.gov%7C9b9c83b56dc54cd4fd6408db41fc7df9%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C638176324924373737%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=df0Q%2FLxZYvHJLuvT6Zy%2FvO8nbUUM315R06nvQzZu%2FQU%3D&amp;reserved=0\">DNR awarded $14.2 million in first-round funding<\/a> to 21 communities. A great start, but interest in the Michigan Spark Grants program far exceeded the department\u2019s expectations. The DNR accepted over 460 applications requesting more than $280 million.<\/p>\n<p>A new philanthropy-focused partnership through the Council of Michigan Foundations will make Michigan Spark Grants funding available this summer to communities identified as \u201copportunity communities\u201d \u2013 those that traditionally have been under-resourced and under-represented and who lack access to parks and recreation.<\/p>\n<p>This innovative model aligns with federal funding requirements to support communities adversely affected by COVID-19, along with helping to improve and redevelop existing public recreation in communities that historically have experienced barriers to accessing these types of grants.<\/p>\n<p>The DNR\u2019s new partnership is aimed at removing barriers facing these nearly 40 opportunity communities in accessing not only funding, but also the needed supporting services for expanding a community\u2019s ability to successfully manage and implement recreation projects.<\/p>\n<p>Prospective applicants can visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fdnr%2Fbuy-and-apply%2Fgrants%2Frec%2Fsparkgrants%3Futm_campaign%3Dspark%2Bgrants%2Bopen%2Bapps%2Bcmf%26utm_medium%3Dpr%26utm_source%3Dgovdelivery&amp;data=05%7C01%7CLapshans%40michigan.gov%7C9b9c83b56dc54cd4fd6408db41fc7df9%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C638176324924373737%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=SkvHA5pd3zIc6EvFSrbKvm3aair%2Fhf5ulw7Q1RE%2Bz0g%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Michigan Spark Grants webpage<\/a> to determine their eligibility and best prepare to complete the grant application:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The final round (nearly $23 million) of Michigan Spark Grants through the DNR (applications due June 26).<\/li>\n<li>The $27.5 million subset of CMF Michigan Spark Grant funding and additional resources available to opportunity communities (details coming this summer).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to Apply<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applicants can seek a minimum of $100,000 up to a maximum of $1 million. Applications opening May 1 are due June 26, with award announcements expected in late September.
