Michigan Officials Learn About Successful Millage Campaigns at League Seminar

Posted on March 29, 2012 by Dene Westbrook

Roger Martin of Martin Waymire Advocacy talks about millage elections to Michigan Municipal League members.

LANSING, Michigan – More than 30 municipal officials from throughout the state attended a Michigan Municipal League training session Thursday, March 29, 2012, about how to best seek tax increases from local voters to fund essential services, such as police and fire safety.

Dozens of communities have already gone to their local voters for support and guess what – voters are overwhelmingly saying YES! In recent local elections, about 80 percent of millage requests were approved by voters in Michigan communities. The attendees of Thursday’s training heard from Roger Martin, APR, of Martin Waymire Advocacy Communications, and Derek Melot, Senior Editor, Bridge Magazine.

Martin’s firm has led numerous successful millage campaigns and gave tips and suggestions to guide municipal officials through the process. Melot’s media organization recently did a series of articles about how property taxes have declined.
