The Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council (TAMC) recently released its legislatively required annual report. TAMC noted that the federal aid eligible roads “maintained the gains made in 2022.” Data shows 67% of federal aid roads were good/fair (26%/41%) compared to (25%/42%) in TAMC’s 2022 report, with 33% poor.
The report notes that only about one-quarter of non-federal aid roads (paved and unpaved) were rated in 2023. This is consistent with local road agencies estimate of unrated non-federal aid roads – and indicates more data is needed.
Regarding bridges, the report notes that Michigan bridges improved slightly in 2023, “seeing a gain in the number of fair and decrease in poor from 2022.” Overall, bridge ratings were: 34% good, 55% fair, 7% poor, and 4% falling into “severe.”
