Michigan Department of Transportation to Administer “MI Travel Counts” Survey

Posted on April 22, 2024 by John LaMacchia

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will once again administer a travel survey program called MI Travel Counts.  This survey will be conducted in two waves (April-June 2024 and April-June 2025).  MDOT has contracted with Resource Systems Group, Inc (RSG), a nationally recognized survey research firm, to conduct the survey.

The MI Travel Counts survey results will help transportation planners better understand how, when, where, and why people travel in and around the state of Michigan. Data from the survey will influence how travel forecasts are calculated, providing an essential update to Michigan’s travel forecasting process. This helps planners strive to boost Michigan’s quality of life and enhance the economic health and viability of the state.  The information gained from the survey will be used to:

  • Identify projects that improve access to jobs, schools, healthcare, and other important activities.
  • Improve roads, public transit, sidewalks, and bicycle routes.
  • Make decisions about how and where to spend transportation dollars.

Randomly selected households will receive an invitation to participate in the survey via U.S. Mail. Upon accepting the invitation, household members will provide demographic data and then report their travel either via a smartphone application, online, or by telephone.

It is the Department’s hope that residents will accept and welcome this invitation. To help make this happen, they are asking for your assistance.  If you are contacted by a resident, please share that this is an official study conducted by MDOT and the information collected is confidential and secure, as required by law.
