Invasive Species Trainings Available for Local Communities

The Mid-Michigan Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) will host two Municipal Invasive Species Trainings this year. These educational opportunities help local municipalities learn more about invasive species in Mid-Michigan, how these species can negatively affect their citizens, neighborhoods, parks, and infrastructure, and what proactive steps can be taken to reduce the spread of invasive species.

Municipal Invasive Species Trainings are great for all facets of local communities- public works, utilities, road and drain commissions, forestry, city planning, city, township or county board members, parks and recreation, garden clubs, lake associations, and more. These free trainings will also offer MDARD recertification credits for certified pesticide applicators.

Agenda breakout session topics include both terrestrial and aquatic invasive species information, including identification by Erick Elgin of Michigan State University Extension and Phyllis Higman of the Michigan Natural Features Inventory, and the Michigan Natural Shoreline program by Julia Kirkwood of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Please note, the February 25th training will have a breakout session on managing invasive species in right-of-ways by Tim Jones of the Michigan Department of Transportation, and the March 4th training will have a breakout session on considerations in the development of aquatic and terrestrial invasive species codes and regulations by Paul Sniadecki of the Michigan Lake Stewardship Associations. View the full agendas on the Mid-Michigan CISMA website at www.inghamconservation.com/mmcisma.
