House and Senate consider preemption on leave time for private employees

Posted on March 14, 2013 by Dene Westbrook

Yesterday the House Commerce Committee passed House Bill 4249, a bill that would prohibit local units of government from passing an ordinance or policy requiring private employers to mandate either paid or unpaid leave time for its employees.

The Senate Reforms, Restructuring and Reinventing Committee also heard testimony on the Senate version of the bill, Senate Bill 173.

While we do not know of any communities who have such policies or are interested in passing such policies, the legislation violates local control, and the League opposed the legislation.
