The Michigan House of Representatives has passed SB 972, which now goes back to the Senate for concurrence then will go to the Governor for his signature. Earlier in the year, the League testified in opposition to SB 972, a bill that would require locals report past due tax amounts on each tax bill. League staff worked closely with the sponsor’s office, Sen. Hildenbrand, to come up with a solution to the problem he was trying to fix.
The bill was amended and now says that once the tax bill is handed over to the County Treasurer, the tax bill sent out during that year by the locals needs to have a notice on it that there are delinquent taxes that have been turned over to the county with contact information for the county treasurer. No specific dollar amount is required; a simple statement that there are delinquent taxes and that is has been turned over to the county.
