Committee reports bill requiring past due tax amounts to be posted

Posted on November 26, 2012 by Dene Westbrook

Last week the House Tax Policy Committee passed a substitute for SB 972, a bill that would require local municipalities to inclue past due amounts on all tax bills.

It would require thata taxpayer be notified of delinquent property taxes on the property as of March 1. This will be included in the already-required yearly statement to taxpayers informing them of the property value of the property and the amount of tax due on that property.

The bill also requires that the statement include contact information for the county treasurer. This new notice requirement only applies to taxes returned to the county treasurer in the year that they were returned.

The House is expected to vote on this bill during the next three weeks of lame duck session.
