Bill to Change Rental Inspection Timeline Introduced

Posted on August 14, 2012 by Dene Westbrook

Senator Dave Robertson (R-Grand Blanc) has introduced SB 1168, a bill that would make multiple changes to the Michigan housing law. It would limit both registration fees and inspection fees for rental inspections as well as change the timeline for inspections to not less than 6 years but no longer than 10 years.

The bill would also require an inspector to inform the lessee of their right to refuse an inspection and request and obtain permission from the lessee. The League has shared these concerns along with others with Sen. Robertson’s office when this was in concept form and again now that it has been introduced as well. Here is the memo the League compiled and sent to Sen. Robertson’s office: SB1168_RentalInspectionsMemo.pdf (68.25 kb).

The League has expressed opposition to similar legislation in the past, and will oppose this bill as introduced as well.

We are of the understanding that workgroups will be occurring on this in the future.  If you are interested in providing feedback on workgroup discussions or on the bill in question, please feel free to contact me.
