Project Description
The Oak Park Event Hub and Band Shell project represents a transformative $8,836,324 investment in community infrastructure, designed to strengthen economic vitality and social connection. The 7,825-square-foot facility includes a 4,215 sq. ft. year-round farmers’ market space with indoor/outdoor roll-up doors, increasing community access to fresh produce and facilitating farm-to-business events. The project is expected to expanding vendor capacity to 30, creating new opportunities for small businesses and local artisans. A 1,445 sq. ft. commercial shared-use kitchen will serve as an accelerator for food entrepreneurs, supported by business counseling through a partnership with Oakland Thrive. Together, these features create a vibrant, multi-use destination that supports concerts, markets, and cultural programming. The Event Hub and Band Shell will serve as a dynamic engine for entrepreneurship, community engagement, and inclusive economic development in Oak Park.
Is your project easy to replicate in other communities (clear in its impact and execution for other communities)?
Yes, the Oak Park Event Hub and Band Shell project is highly replicable in other communities due to its clear planning process, strong public support, and diverse funding strategy. A key component of its success was extensive community engagement, with more than 30 sessions conducted to gather input, build consensus, and ensure the project reflects local needs and priorities.
The community also demonstrated direct investment in the project’s long-term success by approving an operating millage for recreation, which will help fund staffing and ongoing operations of the Event Hub. This approach provides a sustainable model that other municipalities can follow to ensure both development and operational viability.
Additionally, over half of the project’s funding was secured through grants, showcasing how communities can leverage external resources to reduce the local financial burden. Together, these elements create a clear, adaptable roadmap that other communities can replicate to achieve similar economic, social, and cultural benefits.
What is the Community Wealth Impact (based on one or more of the categories you selected) of your project?
The Oak Park Event Hub and Band Shell project delivers meaningful Community Wealth Impact across multiple key areas:
Lifelong Learning: The Event Hub will support ongoing education through culinary classes and shared kitchen rental opportunities, giving residents and aspiring entrepreneurs hands-on experience to build skills, launch businesses, and pursue personal growth.
Public Health: As an inner-ring suburb adjacent to Michigan’s largest urban area, Oak Park is uniquely positioned to expand access to fresh, healthy food. The enhanced farmers market will serve both residents and neighboring communities, improving access to nutritious produce and promoting healthier lifestyles.
Infrastructure: This project transforms public space into a vibrant community asset. The Event Hub and band shell will host an expanded farmers market and community concerts, creating a central destination that strengthens connectivity, engagement, and quality of life for residents and nearby neighbors.
Sustainability: The project supports local food systems, reduces travel for fresh goods, and encourages small-scale entrepreneurship. It also prioritizes environmental stewardship through the preservation of green space and the planting of trees and enhanced landscaping, transforming what was once a barren grass field into a more sustainable, attractive, and ecologically beneficial community space.
Describe the creativity and originality of your project.
The Oak Park Event Hub and Band Shell project reflects a highly creative and original approach to placemaking by transforming a barren field of grass on the city campus into a vibrant, multi-functional destination. Rather than continuing to rely on temporary or underutilized spaces, the project reimagines this area as a dynamic indoor-outdoor farmers market, allowing the current market to relocate from a parking lot into a purpose-built, welcoming environment.
The addition of a dedicated band shell further enhances the site, creating a central gathering place for the City’s popular summer concert series and other cultural events. This intentional design fosters a stronger sense of community by bringing residents together in a space designed specifically for connection and celebration.
A key innovative feature is the inclusion of a 1,445-square-foot commercial shared-use kitchen, which supports local food entrepreneurs by providing accessible space to prepare, test, and grow their businesses. Together, these elements demonstrate a forward-thinking vision that blends economic development, community engagement, and creative use of public space.
