Michigan Prosperity Agenda: How will Michigan’s foreclosure crisis impact the state’s future prosperity

Program Explores How to Make a Better Michigan

The Michigan Prosperity Agenda is a monthly radio show that challenges listeners to help make Michigan a better place to live, work and play by creating vibrant and prosperous local communities. It has aired on News/Talk 760 WJR at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month throughout 2010 and will continue through 2011.

The hour-long radio program is hosted by Dan Gilmartin, CEO of the Michigan Municipal League (the League). The show is sponsored by the League and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA).

Greta Guest is a business writer and covers real estate for the Detroit Free Press. She’s written extensively on the housing market collapse.

Rick Haglund is a regular contributor to the new online publication www.bridgemi.com (a project of the Center for Michigan), writes his own blog (www.micheconomy.com), and is a freelance writer. Bridge recently published a report in its new online magazine, Bridge, that examines economic life in Michigan and the “Hurdles to Prosperity” that face our state now and in the future. Rick reports these findings.

Audio (length: 10:39 minutes). Rick discusses a recent report he did for the Center of Michigan and job loss in the state. But there are some bright spots, such as in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.

Mary Ross is an associate broker in the Greater Detroit Area with Remerica Hometown One, has served in a number of leadership positions at her state and local realtor associations and has been named Realtor of the Year. She discusses the initiative launched by the Michigan Association of Realtors to sell 100 homes by the end of 2011. These homes were previous foreclosures but have been restored for sale to first time buyers in 15 Metro Detroit communities.

Audio (length: 8:13 minutes).Mary explains how the Michigan Association of Realtors has a program to sell 100 homes in Detroit and has already sold 94 of them. The program also teaches first-time homeowners how to be a homeowner.

Shannon Morgan is vice president of Home Renewal Systems who teamed with the Michigan Association of Realtors on the project of selling previously foreclosed homes in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. These homes have been beautifully restored and are available at bargain prices.

 

Audio (length: 11:04 minutes).Shannon discusses specifics about the program to sell 100 homes in Detroit. The program is allowing many single-parent families to get a house they otherwise would be unable to do.
