Paw Paw Village Manager Larry Nielsen Honored by Michigan Municipal Managers

BATTLE CREEK, Michigan – Paw Paw Village Manager Larry Nielsen recently received the Excellence in Local Government Award from the Michigan Local Government Management Association (MLGMA).

The award was given to Nielsen during MLGMA’s annual Winter Institute Jan. 29, 2014 in Battle Creek. In handing out the honor, MLGMA President Penny Hill said Nielsen was selected for his outstanding work in municipal management and his constant willingness to help other community leaders.

For example, in 2013 Nielsen agreed to help the city of Bangor by serving as its temporary manager while the community searched for a permanent manager. During this time, Nielsen simultaneously served both Paw Paw and Bangor.

“His dedication to his profession is truly inspirational,” Hill said. “He is the consummate professional, always willing to assist his fellow managers and serve when needed.”

Nielsen has been the Paw Paw Village manager since 2007 and previously served as the city manager in Bangor, and village manager and village coordinator in Berrien Springs. He was also director of the Cornerstone Alliance: Council of Commerce and Community Development and was elected as Benton Charter Township supervisor where he served from 1984 to 1991. Nielsen is a past member of the Michigan Municipal League Board of Trustees and he’s been a long-time MLGMA member .as well.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with communities and my fellow municipal managers,” Nielsen said. “There are so many other managers who do outstanding work and are equally deserving of this recognition. To receive this award from my peers is truly humbling and a tremendous honor.”

The Michigan Local Government Management Association is the professional association for local government managers and their assistants from cities, villages, townships and counties throughout Michigan. The association was founded in 1927. For details go to
