Michigan Green Communities promote ‘best practices’ for sustainable planning

LANSING, MI – Local governments throughout the state are finding innovative approaches to supporting environmental stewardship alongside sustainable economic development. The Michigan Green Communities, a peer-to-peer communications and education network promoting the “best practices” of more than 400 sustainability frontrunners in local governments from around the state, will showcase examples of these approaches during a two-day Michigan Green Communities Conference, to be held Feb. 25-26 on the University of Michigan-Flint campus.

Presenters will explore themes of collaboration, sustainable planning, natural resources management, and economic development. On day two of the conference, Great Lakes Adaption Assessment for Cities will showcase “Imagine Flint,” a master plan that integrates local and regional sustainability efforts.

Among the presenters is Tania Howard, Renewable Energy Program Coordinator for the Michigan Energy Office (MEO), a division of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Howard will discuss the connection between renewable energy and economic development, and present details of MEO’s Renewable Energy Program. She will also discuss tools and resources available to help local governments in becoming “Solar-Ready Communities”.

The conference is sponsored by the C.S. Mott Foundation, Freshwater Future, University of Michigan Graham Sustainability Institute, Great Lakes Adaptation Assessment for Cities, University of Michigan-Flint, and Michigan Municipal League Foundation.
